Godelfridus Maulaku has personally experienced the impact of environmental damage caused by mining. "The first manganese mining company started operating in my village in North East Timor around 2010. At that time, my father worked as a small-scale collector. Two years later, a clean water crisis began in my village, and the only water source became undrinkable. Until today, 13 years later, the people in my village still have to buy water for drinking," shares Godel.
Currently, Godel is part of the Sahabat Alam community under the auspices of Walhi East Nusa Tenggara. He actively campaigns against the impact of mining on local communities, including issues related to the construction of a smelter on the coast of Kupang, which has caused damage to seaweed beds - an important source of income for the residents. The smelter also obstructs the access of the local community to the sea.
As a student, Godel leads the Mapala organization on his campus, where he designed a campaign called "1000 Love Letters for Kupang," with the goal of motivating the locals in Kupang to plant trees. The campaign received a positive response from the community, and as a result, Godel was invited to meet Governor Viktor Laiskodat. In his daily life, Godel has a hobby of writing songs.
