Hilwa Waniza is the CEO and one of the founders of Women needs in Bengkulu. She is deeply concerned about gender equality, sexual violence, and women's empowerment issues. Coming from a patriarchal family background, Hilwa does not want any more women to experience the same situation. For her, women have the right to be treated equally with men. Since 2022, Hilwa and her colleagues have been implementing various programs involving women and girls. This includes programs for girls drop out of school and roadshows in schools related to reproductive health and education about sexual violence.
Hilwa and her colleagues have also established a program called "Women Class," which is a free weekly learning space for young women to learn together about self-awareness, gender equality, and repro- ductive health. Through education and awareness, Hilwa hopes to achieve positive impacts, especially for women, and increase public understanding of these issues.
In addition to being an advocate for women's issues, Hilwa is also active as an English teacher and a fashion designer who uses natural materials in her clothing designs.
