Our Social Impact for
Inclusive Change

WeSpeakUp.org has reached hundreds of young activists and women from various communities across Indonesia. Through leadership training and capacity-building programs, storytelling, and collective campaigns, we strive to encourage the active participation of marginalized groups in creating a more just and equitable society.

Why This Change Matters

Many communities in Indonesia, particularly women, young people, and indigenous communities still lack safe spaces to speak out and participate in decision-making that affects their lives. The dominant narratives in the media often fail to reflect their experiences and struggles. Furthermore, the growing erosion of civic space makes advocacy efforts increasingly challenging.

We are here to address this disparity. We believe that the voice of every individual, especially those from marginalized groups, is key to meaningful and sustainable change.

Our Steps Toward Change

We operate through a three-pillar approach: Capacity Building, Empowering Voices, and Civil Society Engagement. This approach enables us not only to build individual skills but also to strengthen community ecosystems and drive systemic change.

Capacity Building

Over the past 24 months, WeSpeakUp.org has trained 279 young activists from 38 provinces across Indonesia in leadership and social advocacy.

Through the Muda Bersua(ra), Puan Bersua(ra), and We Create Change, programs, participants aged 18–35 undergo training to develop campaign strategies, write compelling narratives, and build support through digital content.

Puan Bersua(ra)

We created a learning space for women leaders across various issues through the Puan Bersua(ra) initiative. A total of 21 women from various organizations and regions came together to support one another and strengthen their movements.

We believe in the power of storytelling as an advocacy tool. To that end, we developed a Storytelling training program in collaboration with Sakdiyah Ma’ruf. Participants reflect on their movements, engage in direct dialogue with village communities, and learn to convey narratives in an authentic and inspiring way.

Additionally, we regularly feature profiles and stories of young activists through storytelling videos on YouTube and social media content. We also collaborate with other organizations to host storytelling events where young activists can share their stories on stage and be heard by a diverse audience.

We chose TikTok as one of our key platforms for addressing social issues, particularly to reach young people. In less than six months, we have produced dozens of pieces of content, some of which have gained widespread attention (gone viral). The impact of this viral content has two sides. First, the positive impact: it has significantly increased engagement and followers on the TikTok account @WeSpeakUpOrg. Second, digital attacks such as body shaming, sexual harassment, hateful and violent comments, as well as labeling from fanatical supporters and paid influencers.

Civic Engagement

Throughout 2024, we supported 65 social campaigns, including 43 campaigns initiated by We Create Change alumni, receiving a total of nearly 400,000 signatures from the public.

Internal Learning Culture

We are fostering a strong learning culture within the organization. Throughout the year, we have organized:

Digital Security Training
(with SAFENet)

These two training sessions have equipped our team with the skills to facilitate community engagement and run digital campaigns safely.
